Last Week

As I sit here, nursing an awful cold, I place all blame on my previous week. With the thought of making some extra cash during the holiday season, I decided to sub. Although it wasn't a difficult job, I did spend the week with very germy children. And it was exhausting. Here's a breakdown.

Monday- I subbed in a fourth grade classroom at Deerfield. Because Youval had the car, I rode my bike. There and back. In the rain. Awesome. Also, because it was raining, the kids were inside all day. ALL DAY. Including 40 minutes of PE. On the plus side, we did a lot of reading, they put on a play to "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing", they had music (break time!) and some kid had a birthday so they ate donuts. In retrospect, that might not have been the best idea when them stuck inside all the time...

Tuesday- First time ever subbing at Irvine High. I ran into some of my old girls, which was great. It was also maybe one of the easiest days in the whole wide world. First period the kids were revising each other's papers on Africa and AIDs and things like that. A few kids asked me to grade it. I didn't recommend it because I had just finished grading all of my finals the day before and I was in pretty harsh mode. Second period was a prep period so I had (when you added in break, advisement and lunch), over two hours to sit and watch things off of my ipod. Thank goodness I had brought it with me. Third period, the kids studied and then took a test and then chatted. Again, easy-peasy.

Wednesday- Fifth grade at University Park. It was early release day, so that was lovely. Also, the kids were super laid back. The one tough part was when we tried to read "Casey at the Bat" and then kids had such a hard time understanding it. They were kind of duds. I kind of ended up regretting that decision. Oh well. I taught a nice long math lesson at the beginning of the day that went really well, although one kid did not understand lowest common denominators. And one kid kept looking for her glasses. And then refused to wear them. That was odd.

Thursday and Friday- These two days, I swear, were more exhausting then the my entire semester at C of I. First graders at Eastshore, which was nice because I was at a familiar school with people that I knew but at the same time, absolutely draining. First graders cry about everything. This girl ran in puddles, knowing that she shouldn't since her socks and feet would get wet and still did and cried about it. One boy wanted to play with the jump ropes during PE and cried about it. For Pete's sake! I have no compassion for this. The sub plans weren't great, so I was constantly juggling for what to do and how to do it and what to teach. Luckily if a lesson went south, I just said "forget it" and went into something else. Luckily they liked to read, which was nice, so we did a lot of that. The second day, we took a walking field trip out to the district office as well as the senior centre to sing CHristmas carols. Good thing I had by then learned all the names of the kids so I could holler at them if they got out of line. There were parents there to help but still a few I had to keep a very close eye on. Some of the kids in general, were just out of control and there were several kids who got talking tos for various things. And, at the end of the day, there was a party. Luckily I didn't have to keep track of any of that, nor did I have to organize everything but they did end up having a lot of sugar in them. On Friday, they had a lot of free time and they spent it playing with the calculators, sitting in the reading corner or playing with the pattern blocks so I felt slightly justified that they had been doing something slightly educational. But still, overall, incredibly exhausting.

On the plus side, now I am officially, officially on vacation. I bought some of my textbooks yesterday and when the final list for the final class is posted, I'll do that as well. Thank goodness for break!
