Thursday was the last History 500 class and it was fascinating. Pete brought pizza and Niki made chocolate chip cookies and macaroons and his questions were incredible. I'll include those in a later post. Class was very interesting, especially when I totally schooled Bryan who had been saying that 9/11 was a supposed tragedy. A few minutes later, he said that if he passed away, it was be tragic and I quickly responded with "a supposed tragedy". The class cracked up and even Dr. Brady was shocked but not in a bad way. It felt good to finally get one in. As usual, we went out afterwards and there were some great discussions with no real arguing. At one point, we were able to tell Bryan how he could fit better in the class and make his arguments clearer. I'm so excited for 501 and 585 next semester since I have at least three friends in each of those classes but I will miss hanging out with everyone, especially wine nights with Niki and April over the break.
On Friday night, Matt, Jon, Abbey and I got together at Abbey's house before Chris Sherman's mom's Christmas Sing-Along. All four of us had had pretty crazy days and we were more than happy to sit, eat veggies and crackers and cheese and have a little bit to drink (Jon had to prove himself shotgunning and did not meet standards). There was a lot of random discussions, lots of laughing, Six Degrees of Modern Family and then a walk over to the Skinner residence. Michael, Tammi, Chris and his new girl were there, among a lot of other people whom I didn't know. Chris's Yale roommate, Michael, who was also an incredibly talented pianist was there tickling the ivories that whole night. Wine or no wine, the Sing-Along was incredible. We sang pretty much every Christmas/holiday song that was ever created. The Twelve Days of Christmas was anchored by the Five Golden Rings (me, Abbey, Matt and Monica) singing in opera and country style. I played the piano for a little bit while Michael (Yale) rested and Michael (Ellis) and I had an OC meeting on the piano bench. It didn't matter how we sounded, the house was just full of laughter and singing and Christmas cheer. We walked back to Abbey's a little after midnight for the "after-party" which pretty much just involved Bobcat sitting on one couch, Jon and Abbey on the floor and Matt, Chris, Emily and I smushed in on the other couch. I got home near 1:30 am but it was completely worth it.
Saturday morning, after picking up some bagels, I headed over to Lael and Josh's house a few blocks away from the foothills for Book Club. We had been talking about starting one and a few weeks ago decided on American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Becky drove out from Caldwell and Lael's friend from work, Trent, and his wife Amanda came as well. Lael made a egg potato omelette, Trent and Amanda had brought yogurt, granola and pineapple and we all sat down to discuss. I really enjoyed American Gods, even though it was very confusing at times. We had a great discussion about the various gods, our thoughts about the plot and the implications of the war of the gods. Even though I didn't know Trent and Amanda very well, I really enjoyed their input and their questions. We haven't officially picked a new book for the next time but I'm already looking forward to it, especially if we end up having it at the Coyotes on the Creek Winebar.
After book club, I picked Niki up and we went into Eagle to pick up some Lily Jane cupcakes (oh em gee, so yummy!) and then went thrifting. State Street has some great ones and I found some great wall hangings at one for my future house. Two of them I can actually already put up in my office now (one is a drawing of the Castle Mound in Edinburgh and the other one is of the Tower of London). The other three are going in my future kitchen but right now they're going in my future house box. We listened to a bit of Rockapella on the drive and hit up a few great little stores. We timed things perfectly that I got her back to her car, just in time for her to make it to work on time. I will miss excursions to thrift stores over the next month. Guess I may have to find some down here to occupy myself.
I really am going to miss all the activities that will be happening while I'm down here in California. But I just want to be content. I want to be content with being down here for long, to find things to occupy and keep me busy and entertained just as I would be if I were up in Idaho. And don't get me wrong, I certainly enjoy the weather down here, I just miss being left out of things up in Idaho.
