Here is where my problems with babies lie. I understand that people in TV shows should be allowed to have babies. But they become kind of like this prop that gets in the way of the story line.
Case-in-point.
-I'm watching Torchwood: Miracle Day and I think it's great that Rhys and Gwen have a little baby. She is super cute. But now they have to run around all over the place, dodging helicopters and bombs and such while carrying a swaddled blanket. It just ruins the illusion. The baby just never seems to cry and it becomes unrealistic. I'm only an episode in but I assume Gwen will go back to Torchwood and Rhys will take care of the baby and just that doesn't seem to fair after all the crap she put him through the last few seasons. Just saying. Oooooh, plot twist! Rhys not only has to take care of the baby, he's staying in Wales and Gwen is being extradited to America. RTD, you really must hate Rhys!
-Anne and Green Gables: The Continuing Story. Fine, I can take them changing the story around but I cannot handle the random child that Anne gets saddled with while she is trying to navigate the front lines in her search for Gilbert. Like we are going to believe that she is dodging shells and driving ambulances while changing and feeding a baby. At least this one cries a little bit but there is so many other things that are just impractical about the entire situation. It made me hate that story with all of my being.
I think a show that handles babies well is Dexter. Dexter seems to have a very clear line between work and his home life. He goes through hiring babysitters and nannies, like a normal parent would do in that situation. Yes, he did have Harrison in the car once or twice when he had a victim in the trunk and yes, Harrison witnessed his mother's murder by the Trinity killer but this season especially, Harrison stays home, Dexter does his thing and then comes home to have time with his child. Very healthy.
Your thoughts of the lives of television characters and whether or not they should become parents?
