Some films

This week I watched "Out of Sight" which is an Israeli film starring Tali Sharon and Assi Dayan and some other quite well-known Israeli actors. Even if you don't know Hebrew, I would highly recommend watching it. The main character is a blind woman who returns home from her PhD program at Princeton for the funeral of her best friend/almost sister growing up who has just, unexpectedly, committed suicide. I really don't want to go into any more detail but I don't want to ruin it for anyone but I highly recommend this. It's got an incredible theme of not seeing things that are right in front of your eyes, blind or not. Go watch this.

I also watched "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men", based on a book by David Foster Wallace. John Krasinski directs this very interesting, non-linear story of a woman who is interviewing men about relationships for her graduate studies, while she is trying to come to terms with her recent break-up. My favorite thing about this movie is all the cameos- Dominic Cooper, Chris Messina, Will Arnett (as the guy always trying to get into her girlfriend's apartment), Christopher Meloni, to mention a few. Also, John Krasinski's monologue at the end is spectacular. Just spectacular. Also recommended.

Talk about stream of consciousness!

HDWFW

This weeks' HDWF topic is Anderson Cooper. How do we feel about his talk show?

Not a fan.

Now, let's be honest here. I only have seen the show on mute at a coffee house that Niki and I often go to before/between classes and so that's pretty much what I'm going off of. But there is something strange about Anderson Cooper, who I'm used to seeing on CNN or reporting from Fallujah or from the middle of a hurricane or in on the top of an erupting volcano (wait, that didn't happened? Just wait, folks, the day is coming), interviewing housewives about their husbands or talking to men about their strange addictions. It just doesn't feel right.

Go back to interviewing Michael Phelps in the pool. That way we can watch Michael swim....

How do you feel?

Mash-up

I haven't seen Glee in awhile because a) it's kind of annoying me right now and b) no TV until April. But sometimes on my car rides to and from Boise, I listen to the Glee soundtracks. I've VERY picky about what songs I listen to but this one, for some reason, I can always get behind.

Happy 8th Birthday...

... to my favorite leap-year baby soccer player! I've been a Taylor Twellman fan for a LONG time and loved finding out that he was a leap-year baby. He hasn't played forever because of lasting repercussions from several pretty severe concussions but he's been doing so much since then. Check out his foundation, ThinkTaylor.org and find out more about what he does. Happy Birthday, Taylor! Thanks for all that you've done for soccer and are now doing for concussion awareness! Go celebrate like the 8-year-old you are at heart!

How Do We Feel Wednesday

This is going to be a new feature for the blog although don't be surprised when it's never updated since I have no time for blogging these days. I'll pick something and we can discuss how we feel about it. Or I can just tell you and you can decide if you want to comment or not.

Today's HDWF topic is:

Hair transplants: Wayne Rooney went from this....

To this....

To this...

How do we feel?

I feel creeped out. This is gross. Why are you showing us the process? Why am I posting these pictures? Is it even possible for him to head the ball without massive pain? Ugh, ugh, ugh and more ugh. Listen, Wayne, your baldness was just a part of who you are embrace it. These guys did.

Reminds Me Of....

Marriedtothesea.com has been ON this month. Almost every day, their cartoon has reminded me of someone that I know. For example...

Def Bailie, who apparently has decided she wants to do roller-derby.

For anyone dealing with election blues....
Most of my friends. I don't actually really get Pintrest.

My students... they're not allowed to bring laptops to class. I know, I'm so mean.

Kelsey! My librarian friend. I'm sure this won't be one you day.

Andrea- because we would totally say this about someone like that.

Anyone on the C of I campus- I'm sure this is what all our squirrels are thinking- that and murderous thoughts of domination.

SOTM

My concert for MSO is coming up next week and although I am loving almost everything we're playing (Suite from Carmen, some Scottish dances, a few special pieces....), this is my favorite.

I already love 99% of Copland's music and this one is just so incredible. It's got everything I love about Copland's style, plus some of my favorite quotes about Lincoln. I love it. Plus, Gregory Peck... swoon!
